Songs of Summer 2002: Nelly, "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma"
Nelly broke out as a major star with the release of his 2000 debut album, Country Grammar. So expectations were sky-high in advance of the 2002 follow-up, Nellyville. The rapper would more than meet those expectations, and blow right past them.
The second single from the album, "Hot in Herre" proved to be the magic track. Released as a single on April 16, 2002, the tune ran straight up the charts to peak at #1 for the week of June 29, 2002. The infectious Neptunes production was ubiquitous from inner city streets to beaches across the country all summer long, staying in the top spot for seven weeks straight.
Not content with just one song for the summer of 2002, Nelly's follow-up track, "Dilemma," featuring Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child, replaced "Hot in Herre" as the #1 song in America for the week of August 17, 2002. Like the song before it, "Dilemma" was the top song in the country for another seven straight weeks.
While Kelly Clarkson was able to grab #1 for two weeks with "A Moment Like This," Nelly and Kelly Rowland weren't done yet. "Dilemma" went back to #1 for the week of October 19, 2002, where it stayed for two more weeks.
